Who was Menander?<\/em><\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Menander<\/strong> (\/m\u0259\u02c8n\u00e6nd\u0259r\/<\/a>; Greek<\/a>: \u039c\u03ad\u03bd\u03b1\u03bd\u03b4\u03c1\u03bf\u03c2 Menandros<\/em>; c. 342\/41 \u2013 c. 290 BC) was a Greek dramatist<\/a> and the best-known representative of Athenian New Comedy<\/a>.[1]<\/a><\/sup> He wrote 108 comedies[2]<\/a><\/sup> and took the prize at the Lenaia<\/a> festival eight times.[3]<\/a><\/sup> His record at the City Dionysia<\/a> is unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was one of the most popular writers in antiquity, but his work was lost during the\u00a0Middle Ages<\/a>\u00a0and is now known in highly fragmentary form, much of which was discovered in the 20th century. Only one play,\u00a0Dyskolos<\/a><\/em>, has survived almost complete.<\/p>\nhttps:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Menander<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Most of Menander’s work did not survive the Middle Ages, except as short fragments.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until the end of the 19th century, all that was known of Menander were fragments quoted by other authors and collected by\u00a0Augustus Meineke<\/a>\u00a0(1855) and Theodor Kock,\u00a0Comicorum Atticorum Fragmenta<\/em>\u00a0(1888). These consist of some 1650 verses or parts of verses, in addition to a considerable number of words quoted from Menander by ancient lexicographers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This situation changed abruptly in 1907, with the discovery of the\u00a0Cairo Codex<\/a>, which contained large parts of the\u00a0Samia<\/a><\/em>, the\u00a0Perikeiromene<\/a><\/em>, and the\u00a0Epitrepontes<\/a><\/em>; a section of the\u00a0Heros<\/em>; and another fragment from an unidentified play. A fragment of 115 lines of the\u00a0Sikyonioi<\/em>\u00a0had been found in the\u00a0papier mache<\/a>\u00a0of a mummy case in 1906.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1959, the\u00a0Bodmer papyrus<\/a>\u00a0was published containing\u00a0Dyskolos<\/a><\/em>, more of the\u00a0Samia<\/em>, and half of the\u00a0Aspis<\/a><\/em>. In the late 1960s, more of the\u00a0Sikyonioi<\/em>\u00a0was found as filling for two more mummy cases; this proved to be drawn from the same manuscript as the discovery in 1906, which had clearly been thoroughly recycled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other papyrus fragments continue to be discovered and published.[17]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2003, a\u00a0palimpsest<\/a>\u00a0manuscript, in Syriac writing of the 9th century, was found where the reused parchment comes from a very expensive 4th-century Greek manuscript of works by Menander. The surviving leaves contain parts of the\u00a0Dyskolos<\/em>\u00a0and 200 lines of another piece by Menander, so far unpublished, titled\u00a0Titthe<\/em>.<\/p>\nhttps:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Menander<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
